The Bathers
Original French oil on canvas by Georges BINET, signed lower right. BINET (1865-1949), born in Le Havre, worked under Charles Lhullier in his native city, after which he became a pupil of Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin and Fernand Cormon of L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His style follows the transition from the old establishment of French painting to that of the impressionists, who influenced him, particularly Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, and Claude Monet. He exhibited at the National Society of Fine Arts between 1889 and 1939, and received various medals and awards, including a knighthood in 1937 (Knight of the Legion of Honor). In 1941, BINET leaves Normandy for Toulon in Provence, however his scenes of the northern country remain the most popular.
BINET is best known for his landscapes depicting the banks of the Seine. His keen eye to detail in observing nature is evident in The Bathers, where three women are rendered by the river, one standing by the side of the water while her two companions rest on a blanket. Dots of color used in painting the women and their belongings stand out from among the greens of the trees and blues of the river.
In copper wood frame and in good condition. Note there is a slight wave to the canvas top right, barely visible.
