Gallant Scene

£840.00

Original French oil on canvas by well-known painter, illustrator and lithographer Marcel BLOCH (1882-1966). For the most part, BLOCH’s inspiration came from the “scenes galantes” of the 18th century, transposed to the Art Deco and Belle Epoque periods of the early 20th century and late 19th century respectively. Born in Paris, BLOCH studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs where he received the first prize. He subsequently exhibited at various salons in France and at locations around the world including Belgium and the United States.

This painting is a good-sized “scene galante” depicting a hand kiss, both man and woman elegantly dressed in the finest of the era. She is sitting on a green sofa, the frills of her dress taking up a large part of the canvas. His red jacket and her hair add a touch of color to an otherwise neutral palette. There is an element of gaiety that transpires through her expression and pose.

In lovely ornate frame and in great overall condition. Small chip to the canvas where the woman’s dress is, not easy to see.
