Olive Trees

£480.00

Original vintage French oil on canvas by Gérard FAGARD (1938-2021), signed lower right. FAGARD is a well-known representative of the Provencal school, whose style pushes towards expressionism and fauvism through the use of bold colors to express emotion in landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.

This landscape motif with olive trees is an apt representation of the fauvist movement and is similar in style to other works produced by FAGARD. Forms are flattened yet bursting with color. The yellow soil contrasts with the well-defined sinuous trees in brown, purple, and green, all set against a clear deep blue sky.

FAGARD was born in 1938 in Normandy and built most of his career outside the Parisian artistic circles. He was educated in Rouen and Toulon, after which he became an instructor and taught art as a professor at the Foundation Paul Ricard. His paintings are known for their expressionist influences, however instead of anguish they depict optimistic subjects and light-filled, vividly colored landscapes. In his own words, FAGARD painted “directly on canvas, without using crayons – one must know how to eliminate the useless details in order to touch the essential”.
