Dog and Houses
Original vintage French oil on canvas by Madeleine LUKA (1894-1989), signed lower left. A 20th century folk art style landscape painting of a courtyard with houses around it, and a black and white dog standing in the foreground. An atmospheric piece rendered in darker neutrals, greys and browns, as well as blue for the bit of the sky that can be seen from among the clouds, and white for the houses. A touch of brick red adds brightness to the roofs of the house on the left, and of the whitewashed fence on the right. Despite depicting an overcast day, this painting conveys a sense of playfulness and joy through its style, as well as through details such as the red potted flowers on the left.
A painter of naïve art, illustrator, and poetess, LUKA built a universe filled with animals, children, and flowers. Born in the Val d’Oise region as Madeleine Bottet, she married Robert Kula, whose last name she took as an artist, amended by changing the order of the letters. As an artist she held exhibitions in France and around the world, including Paris, Marseille, London, San Francisco, New York, and Tokyo. A street in her native town north of Paris, Maffliers, is named after her.
A beautiful painting in a French-style, vintage wood frame, and in great condition.
